The order beats the operator
San Pedro is at 2,407 m and El Tatio at 4,320 m. Two nights at town height before the high day is what separates a good sunrise from a headache. The geyser operator's own listing recommends doing lower tours first.
The fees are collected on the ground
CONAF publishes Valle de la Luna at CLP 10,800 and the altiplanic lagoons at CLP 8,000 for a foreign adult. El Tatio is quoted at CLP 15,000. All of it is paid at the gate, in Chilean pesos, usually in cash, and almost no tour price includes it.

Atacama Desert weather, and why our figures differ
Most sites quote gridded climate models, which put annual rainfall at San Pedro somewhere between 77 and 84 mm. Those models average over cells about 30 km wide that take in the wet Andean slopes east of the oasis. The Chilean station record says 38 mm. We publish the station figures, and the note explaining the discrepancy sits in the site's own data file rather than being quietly dropped.
Is there an Atacama Desert ticket office?
No, and that is worth knowing before you plan. The Atacama has no single gate: Valle de la Luna is co-administered by CONAF and the Atacameño communities, and El Tatio, Piedras Rojas and the lagoons are each charged by the communities whose land they sit on.
